Conference: Addressing trafficking in human beings: governments’ responses in the EU and NGO strategies outside the EU

Terre des Hommes Internation Federation organizes the conference entitled: " Addressing trafficking in human beings: governments’ responses in the EU and NGO strategies outside the EU” on October 20, 2010 in Brussels.The conference aims at sharing experiences and good practices with other practitioners, policy- and decision-makers active in the anti-trafficking and child protection fields. During the conference, will be assessed strategies against child trafficking implemented by NGOs outside the EU, as well as the anti-trafficking policy of EU Member States within the EU.

Convention on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse

The Council of Europe Convention on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse came into force on 1 July 2010. The first of its kind, this new instrument tackles all forms of sexual violence against children, including abuse perpetrated within the family environment. Apart from sexual abuse, child prostitution and pornography and coercing children into participating in pornographic performances, the convention also deals with grooming and sex tourism.

Ukraine: Virtual Resource Centre

Child Well-Being Fund Ukraine launched the work of Virtual Resource Centre. On the website, in the Ukrainian language, may be found information concerning child abuse prevention, protection of child-witness, safety of children on-line, legislation and legal issues, researches, statistics and the list of counselling centres.

Eurochild’s 7th annual conference, 3-5th November 2010, Sweden

2010 is the European Year against poverty and social exclusion. Child poverty is on the top of the political agenda. Eurochild – a European network of organisations promoting the rights and welfare of children in Europe – takes the opportunity of its 7th annual conference to look at how all stakeholders can work together to end child poverty.

Bulgaria: legal changes aiming to encourage adoption

New law introduced in Bulgaria allows children who have spent more than six months without their parents taking them back, can be put up for adoption without the parents' approval. The law was passed with an aim to reduce the number of children growing up in institutions. Another obstacle for increasing adoption, apart form biological parents unwillingness to give up their parental rights, are prejudice against Roma minority. Some prospective parents suspect them of abandoning children at a young age only to claim them back when they are old enough to earn money.

International Symposium - Childhood and Society

The symposium marking the tenth anniversary of the Child's World initiative will be held on 21st - 23rd October 2010 in Festspielhaus Bregenz, Austria. It will focus on best practice in various disciplines and stages of children's development and compare this with findings in the neurosciences, psycho-social sciences, children's rights and the economy.

Better Care Network Toolkit

This online resource has been created to aid child care practitioners and policy makers in planning and providing better care for children - including preventing unnecessary family separation and supporting families and communities to develop better care alternatives when separation is inevitable. The documents included in the toolkit present good practices and have been chosen for their global relevance and practical application.

Residential system reform under threat in Ukraine

After Implementing Order of the Prime Minister of Ukraine aiming for revival and development of residential institutions for children was issued on 23rd June 2010, EveryChild Ukraine called for local and international nongovernmental organizations to appeal against the planned changes that would undermine the achievements made so far in reforming institutional care in Ukraine.

Trees only move in the wind. A study of unaccompanied Afghan children in Europe

The report summarizes the study on the situation of unaccompanied Afghan children in Europe. It was commissioned by UNHCR and conducted in 2010.
The analysis is based on a review of 198 cases. This is a relatively small number in relation to the total number of young Afghans who have made their way to Europe in recent years, and some of the information they provided could not be verified. Nevertheless the report presents in a comprehensive manner situation of minor Afghans, who constitute one of the largest groups of unaccompanied children who are currently making their way to Europe.
