„I love, don’t beat” campaign in Poland

„I love, don't beat" is a slogan of an antiviolence social campaign carried out during September and October in Poland. The aim of the campaign was to prevent family violence and change social attitudes toward the problem. It was targeted at those experiencing family violence, perpetrators of violence, as well as for representatives of institutions responsible for the prevention of violence in the family.

The initiative consisted of TV and radio spots, broadcasted in main radio stations and TV channels, as well as billboards and posters. Visuals featured Polish actors and journalists playing affectionately with their children. A special 24 hour helpline directing people in need to appropriate services was also operating for two months. The message placed on the campaign materials says: "Every child has a right to be happy. If you're experiencing family violence or you're a witness of it, call: 0 801109 801"

The campaign was initiated by the National Centre of Competences Foundation, Ministry of Interior and Administration, and National Police Headquarters, and brought together many institutions, NGOs and media. Celebrities featured in spots and billboards actively supported aims of the campaign.

The images of well-known parents interacting happily with their children were meant to promote the image of modern family free from violence and convey the message that it is possible to raise children in a positive manner and it is worth it.

Organizers were also hoping to increase social sensitivity to symptoms of family violence. According to Police Commander in Chief, who gave his patronage to the initiative, each year Police officers conduct about 800 000 family violence interventions, more then 80 000 of crimes is committed in the context of family violence, and 30 000 children fall victims of violence. Moreover less then 60% of cases that enter criminal proceedings ever reach court.
