Mario Project: Joint action to protect children from exploitation in Europe

Mario project is a joint effort of four NGOs working in the field of child protection to form an advocacy platform for improving protection of children in Europe and pressurizing European and national decision-makers about child trafficking issues. The partners of this 3-year project are ECPAT Nederland, Neglected Children Society in Bulgaria, Nobody's Children Foundation in Poland, Save the Children in Albania and Terre des hommes - Child Relief in Albania, Kosovo and Hungary, all experienced in implementing child protection projects in the European context.

The ultimate goal is the long standing provision of better services to meet the needs and wants of children at risk of exploitation and trafficking.

The project will contribute to the improvement of the system of child protection by targeting organizations and institutions both at national and European level. National advocacy coalitions in Albania, Kosovo, Bulgaria and Poland will be created or reinforced to be able to better coordinate identification and referral of children at risk or victims of exploitation and trafficking. Linking professionals from countries of origin, destination and transit, will result in improved services delivered for migrant children by better understanding the context they are coming from.

After gathering precise information on child trafficking trends the partners will prepare evidence-based advocacy on European level and will use this knowledge to adjust their capacity building efforts towards service providing professionals.

The project was launched during inception meeting held on 30rd March - 1st April 2009 in Budapest. It is supported by the OAK Foundation.
