3..2..1.. Internet – class scenario about Internet safety

Nobody's Children Foundation from Poland in cooperation with Microsoft and Krzysztof Hołowczyc's "Safe Driver Foundation" has launched a project promoting safe usage of the Internet and new technologies among senior primary school children (from 12 till 14 years of age), called "3..2..1..Internet". Krzysztof Hołowczyc is a famous Polish rally driver, very popular among children and young people. As a person engaged in different social activities he agreed to support the Internet safety initiative and become an "Internet safety Ambassador" for "3...2...1... Internet" project.

Upon the "3..2..1..Internet" scenario prepared within the project teachers will conduct a 1 hour and 30 minutes interactive class. The "3..2..1..Internet" educational set consists of a DVD with cartoons and exercises for children and a booklet with an introduction and instructions for teachers. The "3..2..1..Internet" project puts emphasis on education through fun - the cartoons are very colorful, characters look friendly and funny.

The "3...2...1... Internet" scenario is divided into 5 parts according to the following topics:

  • problem of cyber bullying,
  • offline meetings with people met on the Internet,
  • giving out private data,
  • illegal files downloading,
  • addiction to the Internet.

Each part of the class scenario should be conducted according to the same scheme. Each part starts with an introduction made by Krzysztof Hołowczyc. Afterwards, children are being shown a cartoon presenting one potentially dangerous situation that they may encounter while online. The cartoon stops in the moment when the main character has to make a decision about how to proceed and can choose between two options: the safe one with positive ending of the situation or a risky option implying some negative consequences.

To see the tendency in a group, whether they are more likely to go with the safe or risky behavior, children are supposed to make a decision individually and then vote. After that the whole group will see the more popular end of the story. Afterwards to compare both versions they are presented with the other one. At the end of each of the two possible finals Krzysztof Hołowczyc is giving a short sum up. To reinforce correct and safe behaviors, at the end of each cartoons children take part in a group exercise.

The pilot version of the "3..2..1..Internet" project has been already consulted with children during the Youth Panel meeting in April. The class was conducted according to the scenario, using all methods mentioned above and received a very favourable feedback. The official launch of the project took part in May at the "School of Internet safety conference".

"3...2...1...Internet" educational sets were distributed to all primary schools in Poland. So far more than 19 000 students have taken part in "3..2..1..Internet" classes.
