Each fourth child in Moldova is physically abused by his or her parents

According to the survey launched by UNICEF and the Ministry of Education and Youth and the Ministry of Social, Child and Family Protection, every fourth child in Moldova is physically abused by his or her parents.

At least 25% of children claimed that they are beaten by their parents, 20% recognized themselves as victims of verbal aggression of their parents towards themselves and 15% confirmed they suffer from lack of care and food. Moreover, children are very often ashamed of confessing such facts or feel guilty of what is happening.

Although Moldovian legislation forbids the violence, both verbal and physical, it still spreads in school and in the family. But what is even more dramatic is the fact that half of the employees from over four hundred state institutions, as schools, kindergartens and local authorities say they are not acquainted with the procedures of registering the violence cases. Therefore the Ministry of Social, Family and Child Protection plans to organize a series of seminars for all the social assistants from the country to train them on how to act in case of child abuse.
