Supervision for journalists in Moldova

In December 2008 a supervision for journalists specialized in covering social issues was organized by National Center for Child Abuse Prevention. The topic of the supervision was how the issue of violence against children was covered in the media from the viewpoint of multidisciplinary approach.

Aurelia Guzun, national expert in communication, was invited as expert. Rodica Coretchi-Mocanu, manager of "Amicul" Center, Tatiana Catana, legal consultant at the NCCAP, and Daniela Popescu, president of the NCCAP, participated in the seminar as co-facilitators.

During the supervision, journalists learnt about the provisions of the Law on Prevention and Combating of Domestic Violence in effect since 18 September 2008, as well as about the responsibilities of all governmental and non-governmental actors who, under this law, must cooperate with each other to solve cases of child abuse efficiently.

Special focus was made on the principles and strategies of addressing cases of violence against children in the media. In order to achieve a more efficient exchange of experience, the participants worked in small groups and examined a case study from the experience of the AMICUL Center, and then they presented their opinions regarding the most efficient ways of covering those cases in the media, taking into account the principle of multidisciplinary approach.

The journalists mentioned the need to know the aspects of multidisciplinary approach both in addressing cases of child abuse by specialists charge for child's rights protection and in covering cases of child abuse and the issue of violence against children objectively for the general public. They gave a positive appreciation of the event and proposed to create a press club.
