Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the sale of children, child prostitution

The Optional Protocol on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography was adopted by the UN General Assembly on 25 May 2000. The Optional Protocol on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography draws special attention to the criminalization of these serious violations of children's rights and emphasizes the importance of fostering increased public awareness and international cooperation in efforts to combat them.

The Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, especially Women and Children, was adopted by General Assembly resolution 55/25. It entered into force on 25 December 2003. It is the first global legally binding instrument with an agreed definition on trafficking in persons.

Within the cooperation on Children at Risk under the umbrella of the Council of the Baltic Sea States, a programme on Unaccompanied and Trafficked Children in the region of the Baltic Sea States have been set up by the Working Group for Cooperation on Children at Risk, WGCC. This paper examines some of the issues and problems facing the implementation of the programme.
