Latvian conference CHILD AS A PARTICIPANT OF LEGAL PROCEDURES IN EASTERN EUROPE

Between 8th and 10th of November 2007 in Riga there took place an international conference under the title “Child as a participant of legal procedures in Eastern Europe”. Although there were mainly Latvians participating in this conference, there came also representatives of all the countries participating in the “Childhood without Abuse” project.

The main focus of the conference was to analyse the scope of protection provided for children participating in legal procedures in Eastern Europe and to discuss the steps necessary to be undertaken to improve the situation. Therefore the national coordinators were asked to invite people who could then share the knowledge about this issue – it means representatives of the legal system or people who interview children.

Besides presenting the psychological and organizational challenges concerning special treatment of children witnesses, the significant part of a programme were interactive presentations, instructive movies on interviewing techniques and workshops on how to deal with some obstacles in interviewing children.
